The Big Tour - Day 19 - Wednesday 15th Feb - Borneo/Poring Hot Springs

Woke up about 3.00am worrying about this bloody mountain hike in the next two days. I don’t want to talk about it again in here but I am very concerned that I won’t be able to manage it and will let Tash and myself down.

Anyway, up at 6.00am and down for tea and toast before Mr Choy turned up on time and we set off for the airport.

Charlotte is a bit down because Oodle are making more redundancies and are hitting her department this time. She’s been told that she’s okay and they was her to be trained in other areas but people she likes are being released so she’s upset and feeling awkward about that. It’s great they think so much of her but it’s not a nice environment to work in really.

Journey to airport was normal bumpy road, not too sure who was the worst driver, Mr Choy or his son!! He’s a nice man so it was good to support him.

No issues with the flight or anything, our bags appear to be getting lighter! Only 50 mins flight and we were back in KK. Found decent internet eventually and able to action the jobs we needed to because we don’t think there’s wifi where we’re headed.

Unfortunately the boiler issue still isn’t resolved, looks like we need to get a new one. Annoyance (and expense) we could do without. Sounds Oscar is struggling with it. We just need to leave it in their hands and if they decide to get a new one we have to accept a few thousand pounds bill on our return.

Moving on I booked a Grab and there was no discussion or negotiation about the cost of it so that was good. Just jumped in and set off on a 3ht drive. A bit annoying this extra step in the process because we’re being “punished” by the mountain tour people as they’re charging to collect us from here and yet it’s recommended in their website to acclimatise. We could have just stayed in KK and been picked up tomorrow.

Ah well, it is what it is.

When we stopped for petrol I got water and Mentos and sat back for the journey. After about 45 mins we were using in the mountains that initially felt like Cameron Highlands but then we just kept going up!! Ears must have popped four times. Soon we were in the clouds and it passing down with rain. Couldn’t see a thing. If that’s the view from the summit then it’ll be VERY disappointing. Assuming it goes ahead. They need the money so I bet it doesn’t get cancelled too often.

The driver was on a mission, time is money and all that and he flew around the winding roads and over the potholes. Tash and I drifted in and out of sleep but it was hard what with being tossed around the car.

I keep seeing mountain peaks in the horizon and they all look appallingly high! What have I done??

It did take 3hrs to arrive, it really was quite a busy road and yet it was in terrible condition, it has been bad all over Borneo compared to mainland Malaysia.

The place, Sutera Sanctuary Lodge Hot Springs is lovely, it’s like a spa retreat and we had a very welcoming reception from the staff and nice room.

We continued to sort our bags and then had a lovely dinner. Tried to get wifi but it was terrible. Managed a couple of WhatsApp messages but that was it. Couldn’t get on websites or anything.  A few encouraging and positive messages from the kids for me which was appreciated.

Bed early. Big two days ahead.

We will find out if I was right to worry or whether I’ve been an idiot.
