Cruise Day 6 – St Maarten

Awoke at 5.30am and had a look outside the window to see that we’d arrived in port, with a tug alongside getting itself sorted. That was interesting in itself, but in the background you could see the lights of Icon of the Seas. Even from over a mile away you could tell it was huge.

When we woke up properly a bit later, it was moored right next to us and, sure enough, we were completely dwarfed by it. Absolutely massive.

It was Gareth’s birthday today, and at breakfast we gave him his present — a book about Suede — which he seemed genuinely pleased with.

We then left the boat and headed out towards Bobby’s Marina. Chaos on the quay: six ships all close together, people milling around everywhere or queueing for tours and excursions. So many people — more than we’d encountered at any point so far. Anyway, we made our way through it and headed for the marina, along with quite a few others who had clearly organised their own trips like us.

We got a bit worried when we couldn’t immediately find anyone, but then the catamaran came into view and the owners of Random Winds, Jacky and Amy, came ashore, rounded us all up, got us to sign our lives away, and then we boarded. We met Captain Scott, had the safety briefing, drinks were handed out, and then we were off.

After about an hour we stopped just offshore near a beach. I was straight over the side from the highest point, which felt great. Tash followed, but Nikki and Gaz didn’t — in fact Gaz didn’t get in the water at all at this stop. Tash, Nik and others grabbed noodles to help them float and happily drifted around with rum punch cocktails. Good for them.

I tried snorkelling but the sand had been churned up so visibility was rubbish. Gave up on that and decided to wait for the next stop.

There wasn’t much the crew could do about the weather, so we stayed put, kept jumping in, and then had lunch which Scott cooked on the barbie — he’s Australian, of course!!

There was a nice mix of people on board, mostly American, but we didn’t hold that against them!! Chatted to a few and, as the drinks flowed, it all became more friendly and relaxed.

After a while we headed back out. Tash and Nik sat right at the front with their legs dangling over the edge. It was quite rough heading into the wind, but fun all the same.

And the drinks flowed…

The second stop was meant to offer better snorkelling. It still wasn’t great, but I swam over and saw some fish and the sunken helicopter, which was interesting enough. More interesting, though, was the Tarzan swing they’d set up. We were given a demo and I was straight up for the first go — a very different experience to just jumping in. Loads of people had a go and I must have done it about five times in the end.

Sadly, it was soon time to return to port. I was feeling a bit pissed by now, and Tash had somehow broken a woman’s expensive-looking glasses. Who the culprit was went unnoticed, but the woman was NOT happy!!

Jacky and the team thanked everyone at the end and then announced a winner of “Best Tarzan Swinger”… and said my name. I mock-bowed, but then she added that I’d won a T-shirt, which was a lovely bonus and a genuine surprise.

We headed back towards the ship, but not before Tash had her photo taken with a local policeman who was clearly amused by us (or her). We then detoured to Grumpy’s Bar to get on the internet, had a couple of drinks, and caught up with friends and family. All was well.

Back on the ship, grabbed some food and collapsed for an hour’s sleep before meeting the others downstairs at the Italian restaurant. Got a drink while waiting for the buzzer, but it wasn’t long.

Nice food as always. Some bloke nearby was complaining about something — possibly the atmosphere — all a bit odd. In response, us and a table of women created plenty of noise and took the piss. The waiters enjoyed it and started making shapes out of napkins. Puerile and childish, but still funny.

After dinner we headed back to the Live Lounge and stayed there for the rest of the night, enjoying the entertainment or watching things unfold in the casino. Gaz played roulette but didn’t end up a winner from what I could see.

Nik wasn’t feeling great, so they headed off to bed around 11.00pm. We stayed until midnight. A bloke was dancing on his own to Baggy Trousers, so I went over and joined him in solidarity. His family and friends found it highly amusing.

We eventually called it a night as Tash was struggling a bit and got emotional about her mum. Back in the room she stood out on the balcony — probably not the best idea — but it was fine. We watched the stars for a bit and then went to bed.

Another long and tiring day, but I think we made it a birthday — and a day — to remember.

Chuffed with my T-shirt.

End of Day Summary

A full-on, boozy, sun-soaked day that mixed proper fun with a few emotional moments. From towering cruise ships and a brilliant catamaran trip to Tarzan swings, birthday celebrations, and late-night dancing, it felt chaotic, ridiculous, and memorable in exactly the right way — the kind of day you’ll still be laughing about years from now.

Budapest - Full Tourist Day and Boat Cruise Night

Up at 9.00am.

I went out and picked up croissants and orange juice and we were out before 10.00am — doing well!

Off to Gellért Hill first and the views were absolutely worth it. Clear skies, bright light and the city laid out beneath us — stunning. Then it was downhill and over the bridges, the heat starting to build as the day went on.

Stopped for beers at a decent bar, then carried on walking and sightseeing our way through the city.

Eventually we reached Budapest Castle, crossed the Chain Bridge, past the Shoes on the Danube and on towards Parliament — such an emotional and powerful spot.

On the walk back we hit the Lángos queue — long wait but totally worth it, hot, filling and exactly what was needed. Then on to St Stephen’s Basilica before stopping for a few beers in the park near our place. A group of lads on a stag do nearby provided some background entertainment.

Back to the apartment for a 45-minute power sleep, then out again.

Stopped at a café for beers, followed by a walk along the river.

At 6.30pm we boarded the boat — window seat, perfect timing.

Meal and drinks buffet, great views, live music (a man very keen on tips!). We moved between the inside and outside decks as the light changed. Within ten minutes it went from light to full darkness and suddenly the city just lit up — absolutely spectacular views and photos. We can see why it's called the Blue Danube - it was striking

After 90 minutes, we disembarked and walked along the river for about half an hour to the For Sale Bar — quirky, fun, live music, one beer and then home.

Stopped at the shop for two cans (not four!) 😂, played a few hands of cards, and then bed.

✅ End of Day Summary

A proper full Budapest day — viewpoints, historic landmarks, street food, river cruise, live music and late-night cards. Hot, busy, tiring in the best way — and the Danube at night was the standout moment. Another cracking day.

Barbados - Boat Trip Day

Up at 7.45am and got ourselves sorted. Grabbed some food from the local minimart, then pickup was at 9.10am. Short journey down to Bridgetown Harbour and on to the Stiletto catamaran.

There were 12 of us in total — a nice group, good mix. We were told there was no alcohol available… which turned out to be a complete lie 😂 — beers appeared almost immediately. Cruel trick, but a welcome one!

Set off and unfortunately it was raining. First stop was for snorkelling — we saw turtles, large fish and even a stingray, but the visibility was poor, which was a shame. Still great to see them though.

Then on to two shipwrecks, which was really good and definitely the highlight of the underwater bits. After that we cruised along the coast towards Sandy Lane — by now the drinks were flowing freely.

More swimming, more drinking in the sea, proper holiday behaviour. Headed back afterwards in the rain again, with loud music blasting, good vibes all round.

Short bus journey home, waved everyone off and had a really good laugh with them. Back at the beach - by now we were pretty drunk. Got more beers, played my music far too loud, more swimming, all very silly and fun.

Got changed and walked to Savvy on the Beach, stopping at a small bar on the way and staying there a while. Played music, chatted with another couple - that was a real laugh. Eventually carried on to Savvy, had some food, then had to go back for the umbrella.

That’s when Tash got funny, and we ended up having a discussion on the walk home. I was definitely pissed off by then — far too much drink involved. We did sort it out, but it was time for bed.

✅ End of Day Summary

A brilliant, messy, boozy, fun-packed day — turtles, shipwrecks, beach beers, loud music and classic holiday chaos. Slight wobble at the end thanks to too much drink, but still one to remember for all the right reasons. A proper holiday day!

Speedboat on the Thames

We went off to London today to use Mum’s 70th birthday present, a speed boat ride down the Thames! We left a little later than I had planned and picked Mum up whilst Lewis and Jack went and got petrol and we then caught up with them on the M40. We had to be at the pier (right by the London Eye) by 10.45am, we somehow got there with minutes to spare, I was stressing, it shouldn’t have been like that..if we’d left on time!

Anyway, after a quick safety briefing and putting on the life belts we boarded the boat (12 people) and were off, initially it was a tour at a slow pace along the river and getting information on various landmarks which was interesting (I knew quite a few of the facts being raised but also learned some new ones so that was good.) And then after Tower Bridge we were allowed to put our foot down, and he certainly did just that, it was excellent. They had music blaring out as well so it worked really well. Everyone loved it, twists and turns and it was exhilarating, didn’t last long (about 15-20 mins) and then we were turning round to return home, but definitely worth it. Mum loved it, in fact we all did.

When we got back we then walked along the South Bank heading towards Giraffe restaurant but before we got there we found the Italian restaurant, Strada and went there instead. We sat outside but I wasn’t in shade, wow, that was hot! The table and cutlery were absolutely burning hot, I couldn’t pick up the knife and fork! Anyway, really nice meal, then walked along and got an ice cream and we all crashed out asleep for 20 minutes under a tree and finally got ready and left.

Lewis was going back up to Huddersfield which is why he’d driven so we waved him off and made our own way back through Chiswick and dropped Mum off and back in time for the World cup

The World Cup final was between France, strong favourites before the tournament began, and Croatia who beat us in the semi-final. It’s been a great World Cup this time and the final lived up to that as well and was a great spectacle. Croatia were hard done by with two goals conceded that were very harsh indeed, a penalty decision using VAR that the ref got completely wrong I feel – but France ran away with it in the end and it was a comfortable 4-2 win, but it was a decent game and I really wanted Croatia to win it…ah well.

That was it then really, pottered around at home and had an early night after a long weekend.

Still bloody hot!

Boat trip down the Thames

Grandma has been getting upset about me agreeing to take her on a boat trip down the river and then out for a meal but because I didn’t turn up she thinks she’s done something wrong to upset us! Aside from the fact I knew absolutely nothing about this I still felt guilty. Anyway, we agreed we would do it today and we would pick Grandma up (only Tash and I as the kids were all out) and meet Mum and Derek down at the Boat place

Picked her up and she was very confused. Said we were taking her for the boat trip and she then thought it was Waitrose. Difficult to cope with, I don’t know how mum does it every day – so patient and such a shame it really is.

Met Mum and Derek down at Salters and then found out we couldn’t get the boat we intended to. The chap took a booking for 4.30pm and we went to the Folly and had a drink to while away some time.

The trip was excellent and with the weather being so gorgeous it was a very pleasant time. Back all too soon so we went to the Folly cafe and got a coffee and some cake. Very nice indeed – we live in a great City!grandma selfie boat trip

Took Grandma home, picking up Charlotte and Rose on the way back as they’d just arrived from Westfield's shopping in London and Grandma said, ‘Oh, I don’t want to be home’ when we got there and she then did all she could to make us stay longer like sorting out the TV and her food and so on. Such a shame, felt really sorry for her when we left.

Dropped the kids off and then went to the Plough and met Wayne & Kerry fro a drink as there was an event in Wolvercote (isn’t there always?) and their girls had worked all day. Nice to see them

Went home and off to bed at 9.20pm as early day tomorrow for the TED training in London. Not much fun setting the alarm clock for 5.30am!!

A lovely day all told – bit of a hangover in the morning but getting used to these now!
