Lovely nights sleep, down for breakfast and it was lovely, gentle relaxing music playing, we felt like we were in a spa. We relaxed for an hour or so and then joined the 11.00am tour of the mansion, there must have been about 40 people. We didn’t quite realise what we’d booked ourselves into when choosing this place!
The tour was well over an hour and then we grabbed our clothes and drive out to Penang hill just as it started raining. It didn’t let up for the next four hours either!
Parked and then set out, we were going to hike up and then get the tram back down but I stupidly suggested we don’t bother with that plan and walk down too. Am I going mad?!?
Most of the walk was just steps, I found it very hard indeed, had to stop so many times. I’m starting to have real concerns about the mountain trek now, I honestly don’t think I’m in a fit enough state to complete it. I’ll keep trying to do so but I think I’ve left it too late to get the required level of fitness, it’s my own fault.
Anyway, enough self-doubt on here, we got to the top and could see literally nothing at all, the cloud cover had come right in so the two of us sat in the food hall soaking wet dripping everywhere and shivering. Checked our fitness apps which told us we’d gone up 179 flights of stairs. It certainly felt it!
Had something to eat and drink and then made our way back out into the rain (did I mention it was raining here again!!?) and retraced our steps down the hill. Bit tricky at times as it was wet, slippery and quite steep. But we made it without our issues and instead of staying out to see the Chinese temple in the evening we went back to the Mansion get get dry clothes.
We need to drop the car off at the airport tomorrow but we couldn’t get hold of the guy that we had the contact details for. Even the girl on reception laughed when she saw his name and said he’s always hard work and asleep most of the time!! We had a back up plan if he didn’t return our comms but eventually I did get a reply and instructions so could relax a bit.
We went back out towards Penang Hill, I filled up the car, petrol here is incredibly cheap, I’ve driven all over the place and it’s cost us about £20!!
As we approached Penang Hill it was clear what we were going there for, this huge great temple was on the side of the hill lit up like a Xmas tree. In fact, that description doesn’t do it justice at all. It was an absolutely incredible sight, it really was. We parked up and wandered up the hill and went into the temple grounds and you can’t explain how it looked. Photos won’t show how good it looked. We went round it and as good as it would have been to go there in the day we were glad we went at night. And we were lucky too because the lights are only for one month.
It was getting late and we hadn’t eaten so we went back to the mansion and went next door to a food market and it was great. Got a pizza and watched the locals all dancing to the live music there. It was a strange and amusing sight and everyone was loving it.
And that was it, our time had come to an end, moving on tomorrow so back to bed, caught up with a few people, social media and the news in the UK. We’re not missing much!
