Lazy start to the day, no rush at all, and then we headed out for breakfast at the Palmenhaus - this was a conservatory/butterfly house which was amazing. Beautiful location and setting - absolutely worth going in the opposite direction to where we actually needed to be for the Palace, but not a regret at all.
After eating we set off on the 50-minute walk to Schönbrunn Palace. The weather held, and the gardens were genuinely lovely. We wandered around, taking it all in, and it was easy to imagine what the whole place must’ve felt like “back in the day.” The grounds are huge — you really feel the scale as you walked around.
More exploring after that, including the riding school, and then a stop for the famous Sachertorte. Or as my brain decided to call it: “sucker?! chocolate cake!”. Honestly, it was a lot of fuss for something of nothing. There were huge queues outside the main cafés, which made it hard work to find somewhere, but eventually we managed to get into Aida’s.
Back to the hotel afterwards for a rest, shower, and a proper sleep — much needed.
In the evening we went out again, starting with the little local bar next door. Quite amusing inside: thrones, swords, the lot - the owner liked us going in there. Then we found an Italian restaurant for dinner - Maradonna’s - and the calzone was spot-on.
Finished the night in the Jaz bar, played cards, had a few more beers, and then bed.
A good day.
